Update, even longer over due.

10 Nov

So there has been no update on this blog for months now. I have been busy with work. And somewhat remote.

Okay a quick list of the changes.

The garlic – was planted and grew, then died. It dries out too easily in the pot and most likely under watered in my absence.

The ginger – survived and is still growing after a period of being dead or dormant.

The sweet potato – the slips that were planted died. I think from lack of regular water. The dog ate the sweet potato with sprouts planted whole.

The BSFL bins – have received all food waste since last photos posted. They are producing larvae and consuming food wastes well.

The chicken coop – is still standing and cleans up as well as ever with a quick spray of the hose.

Hustle and bustle.

It’s hustle and bustle in compost town. A growing population of soldier fly. Finally! I’m worried by what appears to be pale and not pre-pupae crawling off…

Visible in the background of this photo is the twin BSFL compost bins. As soon as I touch a collection canister the chooks are in a frenzy.

The moment the chickens have been waiting for. Down the larvae feeder they go.

Looking down the collection canister, finally the harvest is begining for soldier fly larvae from the bins.

Stragglers

From a whole bulb of garlic, only four or five cloves developed no signs of life. These two stragglers are getting an extension. One had roots and no sprout, the other a sprout and no roots.
